My group works on topics at the interface between fluid dynamics and materials science, studied via a combination of numerical simulations and small scale experiments. Besides high-resolution simulations (Immersed Boudary, Boundary Integral, Stokesian Dynamics) I like to develop mathematical models of flow microphysics of multiphase systems, for example to develop exact solutions that can be used to accelerate the performance of multiphase flow codes. My interest in materials science applications originates from my research experiences in materials science and chemical engineering departments, which has given me an appreciation of flow phenomena driven by non-trivial physico-chemical, surface and colloidal interactions. A primary goal and motivation of my applied research is the reduction and reuse of waste.
Keywords: multiphase flows; complex fluid interfaces; colloidal hydrodynamics; numerical and mathematical methods
Current projects: fluid dynamics of graphene; particle sorting by centrifugation; flow-based methods for battery recycling; microplastics reduction.
