Over 25% of the global greenhouse gas emissions were reported from the transport sector. At the global level, the development and steady growth of the electric vehicles (EV) addresses the issue of dependence on fossil fuels, thus reducing emissions from internal combustion engines (ICE). Following this trend, there’s a growing adoption of electric vehicles (2, 3, or 4 wheelers) in Africa, with different charging models (private or swap shops). While this is promising, given the growing interest and number of initiatives, it is crucial for assess the readiness of African energy systems for the electrification of the transport sector, and the contribution of renewables to this electrification effort. With his work, Rock is seeking to evaluate the technical feasibility, socioeconomic impacts, and environmental benefits of integrating renewable energy into the transportation sector in SSA. The research seeks to provide a detailed analysis of the potential contribution of renewables to sustainable mobility, and co-benefits for air quality and environmental sustainability in the region.
