J.O. (Oriol) Colomes Gene PhD
Profiel
Oriol is currently employed as Assistant Professor in the Offshore Engineering section of the Civil Engineering faculty at TU Delft. He is leading the Computational Multiphysics in Offshore Engineering group, which aims at developing and using advanced computational techniques to address multiphysics problems appearing in offshore renewable energy applications. He is the responsible instructor of the "Floating and Submerged Structures" module in the Civil Engineering master and the "Introduction to Computational Dynamics of Offshore Structures" course from the Master in Offshore and Dredging Engineering.
Onderzoeksinteresses
Oriol has worked on the development of efficient Finite Element solvers for several problems, including: turbulent incompressible flows, free-surface flows or visco-elasto-plastic solids subject to large deformations. His current research focuses on the development of efficient and accurate numerical methods for multi-phase, multi-material and multi-physics problems appearing in engineering applications. In particular, he is interested in the simulation of fluid-structure interactions in applications with complex and evolving geometries. This includes the development of numerical methods to solve problems such as:
- Free-surface flows interacting with structures
- Interaction of floating bodies and free-surface flows
- Structures with complex and evolving geometries subject to hydro/aerodynamic loads
- Vortex-induced vibrations
His main research targets applications in offshore renewable energies, including: Offshore wind, wave energy and floating photovoltaics.
Academische achtergrond
He has a degree (BsC/MSc) in Civil Engineering (2011) and a PhD in Civil Engineering (2016) from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. After finishing the PhD he joined Duke University as a post-doctoral researcher (2016-2020). In June 2020 he was appointed as Assistant Professor at TU Delft.
