Profiel
Alexander Bakker is a part-time researcher/lecturer in the Hydraulic Structures and Flood Risk Group of the Hydraulic Engineering department at the Delft University of Technology. His interdisciplinary research focusses on the performance and (adaptive) life cycle management of critical hydraulic structures, such as storm surge barriers and major pumping stations. In this research, he tries to address the following research questions:
- What is the relation between extreme hydraulic and climatological loads, the performance of hydraulic structures and the reliability of the system behind?
- What is the optimal balance between completeness and usability of models in support of life cycle management of hydraulic structures?
- How can we more effectively learn from the hydraulic structures in practice?
Ultimately, the research aims to develop better methods and models in support of transparent and risk-informed decision-making.
Academische achtergrond
Alexander Bakker is a part-time researcher/lecturer in the Hydraulic Structures and Flood Risk Group of the Hydraulic Engineering department at the Delft University of Technology. He has a degree in Civil Engineering, a MSc Water Resources Management at the TU Delft and a PhD in Tailoring climate information for impact assessment at the VU University of Amsterdam and KNMI. After a two-year postdoc on the Links between Earth system modelling, climate risk assessment and decision making, he moved to Rijkswaterstaat to work on storm surge barrier performance. Since 2021 he has been working for the TU Delft, where he has supervised several PhDs, EngDs and Master and Bachelor theses.
