Inspiring roles to match your ambitions
Although the focus of the roles varies, there are no well-defined boundaries. In fact, we encourage you to closely interact with your fellow technicians and engineers. And we empower you to learn about and work in multiple disciplines. Because our facilities, equipment and processes are interrelated.
Although roles and responsibilities overlap, we’ve listed the three main disciplines. Together, we will match your role in the organization to your background, interests and ambitions.
Cleanroom facilities
To enable leading academic and commercial researchers as well as ambitious students, the building and cleanroom systems must operate flawlessly, 365 days a year.
As a cleanroom facilities engineer you secure the environment needed for the production of nano and quantum chips. You are responsible for the maintenance and optimization of the building and cleanroom systems, including the building management systems.
You will be working with highly complex and integrated cleanroom systems, which control contamination, but also environmental conditions like temperature, humidity and pressure. The systems include:
- vacuum pumps
- airflow systems and filters
- gas distribution and handling systems for a multitude of gases, including inert and specialty gases.
Cleanroom equipment
Our cleanroom are equipped with the latest nanofabrication equipment. The techniques we employ range from photolithography, etching and deposition to wet-chemical treatment and thermal treatment.
As an equipment technician, you are responsible for the maintenance and optimization of a number of our machines and instruments.
In addition, you instruct our cleanroom users, ensuring that they use our highly sensitive and expensive equipment safely.
Users include:
- bachelor, master and PhD students
- postdocs and academic staff
- R&D experts of commercial partners, ranging from innovative startups to leading high-tech brands
Cleanroom processes
Academic or commercial users may have the ideas, but not necessarily the expertise needed to design and produce their unique chips. A user may e.g. have an idea for a lab-on-a-chip application, like a blood sensor.
As a processing engineer, you play a crucial role in designing, producing, testing and optimizing such chips.
This is a service-driven role, in which you collaborate closely with academic users and commercial R&D experts throughout the development process.
Based on your talks with users, you
- advise on and improve designs
- select the appropriate techniques, materials and equipment
- produce and analyse the actual chip

You will join our highly motivated and internationally diverse team of some 30 technicians and engineers. We collaborate closely and meet regularly to share knowledge in an open, informal and supportive atmosphere. As a tight-knit community, we also engage in social activities. Working with the latest technology, we help each other respond to challenges. And we will give you all the training and coaching you need to develop your career and become an expert in your field.
Our cleanroom facilities
Kavli NanoLab and Else Kooi Laboratory constitute the Delft Cleanroom facilities. The nanotechnology-driven research conducted in our cleanrooms ranges from quantum computing and security to medical applications and the energy transition.
Our facilities meet the highest international standards for cleanroom. And as a global hub for research into nano and quantum technology, Delft Cleanroom are key contributors to Quantum Delta NL.
To meet the growing demand for our facilities and services, Delft Cleanroom has the ambition to build entirely new facilities on campus. As you grow your expertise and knowledge, you will be involved in the development of those facilities.
