Running Projects
IANA Intermodal Network Analysis (2020-2024). Led by the University of Maryland, R.H. Smith School of Business, Supply Chain Lab, a multi-year research project is carried out to assess the intermodal transport network in the USA. The project is carried out for
IANA, the Intermodal Association of North-America. Results are captured into a modular on-line course that is used through the IANA website by academics, in education, and by public and private organizations. (TUD-MAS-PA: co-applicant and research)
On the Move (2020-2024). Mobility must become sustainable. But there is great uncertainty about the form this should take, ranging from electric to hydrogen, self-driving to collective, shared to as-a-service, or perhaps everything at once. In collaboration with public stakeholders and private companies, the Radboud University and TU Delft develop research methods and innovative approach that systematically deals with these uncertainties. (TUD-MAS-PA: co-applicant)
HERoS – Health Emergency Response in Interconnected Systems (2020-2023). The coronavirus outbreak is continuing to spread. The number of infected people and the death toll continues to rise. We work on developing the large-scale simulation models that combine agent-based approaches with discrete-event simulation techniques for speed, by which we can test the policies at different policy levels. (TUD-MAS-BA: simulation toolkit)
MIRRORS – Multiscale integrated Traffic Observatory for large Road Networks (2018-2023). MIRRORS is a 5-year NWO-TTW project with 2 PostDocs and 3 PhD students that will create a modelling infrastructure for large-scale traffic models based on data analytics. (TUD-MAS-PA: co-applicant)
ICAI Police AI Lab (2020-2024). As one of the partners in the ICAI Police AI Lab, several research projects are carried out on the use of simulation model-based AI for decision making based on extremely sparse information, and for optimizing interventions for fleeing persons. (TUD-MAS-PA: PI)
Component-based Simulation in the Cloud (2022-2026). As a joint project with TNO, this project researches how component-based simulation on cloud hardware can lead to faster model building by professionals and potentially end-users. (TUD-MAS-PA: PI)
PDPC INSPECT (2023-2030). This project that is part of the Pandemic and Disaster Preparedness Center (PDPC) of TU Delft, Erasmus University, and Erasmus Medical Center, studies and develops international network surveillance tools for pandemics and epidemics. via transport hubs. Main product of the project will be integrated early warning methods and tools. (TUD-MAS-PA: co-applicant).
Past projects (2017-2022)
TRANSSONIC – Transport Self Organization through Network Integration and Collaboration (2017-2022). The TransSonic project is a 4-year project in the Complexity in Logistics call of NWO and the Top Institute Logistics in The Netherlands (TKI-Logistics). The project researches the technical and organizational blockers and enablers, and their interaction, for providing integrated seamless multimodal transport services in the Netherlands. (TUD-MAS-PA: project lead)
COMPLEXITY IN HI-TECH SUPPLY CHAINS (2017-2022). High-tech systems are produced in a joint effort of some hundred teams of highly specialized engineers employed by the system integrator and hundreds of suppliers. Because of the sheer size and complexity of the supply chain, it is impossible to oversee the entire operation. Led by TU Eindhoven and supported by ASML, Philips, VDL and Hilti, we investigate and prescribe how teams should coordinate deliveries such that responsive, resilient and cost-effective supply chains emerge. (TUD-MAS-PA: co-applicant)
GAMPSISS: GAmeful Music Performances for Smart, Inclusive, and Sustainable Societies (2017-2022). GAMPSISS is an interdisciplinary NOW/SIA research project, led by Codarts, the University of the Arts in Rotterdam. Smart, inclusive, and sustainable societies need public values such as openness and tolerance to be rooted in citizens’ minds and behaviour. We explore how artistic performances that fuse classical music and gaming will contribute to transforming the existing listening culture into one required for smart, inclusive, and sustainable societies to emerge. (TUD-MAS-PA: co-applicant)
T-TRIPP – Tools for Translation of Risk Research into Policies and Practices (2017-2022). The T-TRIPP project, led by the Rathenau Institute and commissioned by
NWO and the Ministry of Health, aims to contribute to a better translation between research results to policy and practices, and from policy goals to research goals in the field of modern biotechnology. It thereby aims to integrate societal needs and objectives in the process in order to stimulate the development of safe and responsible industrial biotechnology products. We develop serious games to promote biosafety and biosecurity. (TUD-MAS-PA: co-applicant)
Smart Sensing (2017-2019). ProRail Innovation wanted to assess the possibilities for automatic recognition and registration of rail cars, as well as their wagon numbers and dangerous cargo signs. The project was one of the technologies that was evaluated for the purpose of increasing the information quality of rolling stock, especially for dangerous cargo. (TUD-MAS-PA: project lead)
Past Projects (2010-2020)
i-TRACK – Integrated system for real-time tracking and collective intelligence in civilian humanitarian missions (2016-2019). This 4-year H2020 project aims at developing real-time tracking technologies and decision support solutions for humanitarian aid workers. TU Delft is responsible for two of the eight work packages, focused on setting up realistic scenarios and simulations to stress-test the system, and to evaluate the effectiveness of the iTRACK system. (TUD-MAS-PA: co-applicant).
INDEEP – Innovation Network Design Enabling Excellent Ports (2017-2019). The aim of INDEEP is to determine the preconditions and the mechanisms to innovate effectively and successfully, specifically for the logistics sector with its special properties. We use a number of already awarded Top Sector projects from the SmartPort roadmap 'logistical connectivity' as case studies to generate a toolkit with best practices and lessons learned. (TUD-MAS-PA: co-applicant)
SYNCHRO-GAMING – Simulation and Serious Gaming for Rail Cargo and Synchromodal Transport in the Logistics Chain (2015-2018). The goal of this 4-year NWO / TKI-Logistics project is to identify the (combinations of) measures for improvement of efficiency, reliability, flexibility and sustainability of logistics chains that are most effective, and obtaining support from the parties involved who have to coordinate the measures to implement. Research is carried out into synchromodal planning algorithms, if possible, in real-time, data-driven simulations, and serious games for collaboration and situational awareness with which the measures can be designed and tested. (TUD-MAS-PA: co-applicant)
ProRail Railway Gaming Suite (2010-2019): In a 9-year 2.5 million Euro project, we research innovative gaming and distributed simulation concepts for the Dutch Rail Network Operator ProRail. Several simulation engines for different aspects of the network are linked through HLA (High Level Architecture, IEEE standard 1516), and development takes place through the DSEEP process for distributed simulation. Games are both high-tech and low-tech, and aim at testing new control and management concepts in the organization to help ProRail manage the busiest rail network in Europe. (TUD-MAS-PA: co-applicant)
Bangladesh Transport Network (2016-2017). In a one-year project for the World bank, a study was conducted to improve the resilience of Bangladeshi transportation network to natural hazards by assessing the criticality of links on the multimodal transport network. The project combined graph theoretical analyses of the transport network, discrete-event simulation studies of cargo transport, and exploratory modelling and analysis studies to assess the wide variety of options for the World bank to invest in Bangladesh, given the deep uncertainty characteristics of the problem. (TUD-MAS-PA: project lead)
SALOMO – Situational Awareness for Logistic Multimodal Operations in container supply chains and networks 2011-2016). Modern supply chains become longer and more complex due to increasing globalization, labor offshoring, and growth, which are more vulnerable to disturbances, which resonate throughout the network and make planning more difficult. The project focused on eight innovations to be studied in container terminals in the Port of Rotterdam. (TUD-MAS-PA: project lead)
