In the TPM Portraits series, we speak to TPM'ers across the faculty. Personal conversations with people who are (or have been) part of the TBM community in their own way. What have they experienced within the faculty? What is TPM to them today? And how do they see the future? A new portrait appears every two weeks.

How a study project became a successful deepfake detection company

Parya Lotfi always dreamt of running her own business. Through the Tech-Based Entrepreneurship minor at Technische Bestuurskunde (TB), she was able to realise that dream. Together with four fellow students, she devised and developed a tool for detecting deepfakes in photo and video images. Their company DuckDuckGoose now has major players like the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) and the Dutch House of Representatives as customers. Lotfi hopes to one day use the knowledge she gained at TB in Iran, her country of birth.

Energetically working towards a cleaner world

Even as a secondary school student, Sibel Gökbekir already knew she wanted to work in renewable energy. While studying at TPM, she decides to make combating climate change her life's mission. Thanks to her high grades, she was invited to participate in the Honours Programme. As a talent in the field of energy, she hopes to pass on her passion and expertise in renewable energy to future generations.

In search of the best rules of the game in a behavioural lab

Sander Renes, an economist, joined TPM a year ago as an assistant professor of Economics of Technology and Innovation. As a researcher, he concerns himself with setting up IBEX, a behavioural lab. Researchers from TPM and other faculties can conduct behavioural experiments in a controlled environment in this lab. As a lecturer, Renes has noticed how involved TPM students are in their education. He hopes to make more connections between behavioural researchers and labs in the coming years, so they can strengthen each other.

The Swiss Army knife of complex socio-technical issues

Isabelle van Schilt started her BSc Technische Bestuurskunde ten years ago and is now pursuing her PhD at the faculty of TPM. During her student years, she played an active role in the study association Curius and did a research visit at the prestigious MIT. These experiences proved immensely valuable to her current work as a researcher and made her see TB in a different light. "What we do here is unique."

TPM and health systems: from marginal specialisation to strategic theme

For a long time, hardly any focussed attention was paid to the health domain within the faculty of TPM. However, partly thanks to Saba Hinrichs and a new strategic team, that situation completely changed within a couple of years. As an associate professor she uses a systems approach to look for ways to organise the healthcare sector more efficiently, resiliently, and sustainably. A holistic approach is extremely important, certainly in the event of disasters and pandemics, such as Covid-19.

A Leiden graduate in Delft: a perfect combination for TPM

In his 25 years spent at TPM Haiko van der Voort has worked his way up from 'anchorman' to an expert in the field of public supervision and inspections. During that time the scholar Public Administration from Leiden has felt more and more at home in Delft, although he still cherishes that intuitive resistance to models. His hope is that, in the coming years, TPM will continue to look for interdisciplinary cooperation and continue to turn crazy ideas into reality.

From student to professor at TPM

Nitesh Bharosa studied the bachelor programme TB at TPM more than twenty years ago. Nowadays he is professor in GovTech at the faculty. The multidisciplinary character of TPM has shaped and enriched Bharosa enormously over the years. As a professor, he strives to be a role model himself for the new generation of students.

How ethics, art and engineering come together within TPM

Philosophy is nothing to do with engineering? Professor of Ethics Sabine Roeser could not disagree more. For more than twenty years, she has been working at TPM to put the role of emotions in decision-making about the development of risky technologies centre stage. In the past decade, she has also been involving art in her research. "Philosophy and art encourage you to consider complex social and technological issues in a different way."

Twenty-five years as a secretary at TPM – a real all-rounder

With nearly a quarter of a century at TPM under her belt, it is safe to say that secretary Karin van Duijn is the faculty’s ears and eyes. Whereas in the early days, you would usually find her at the copier, she has been accumulating ever more tasks and responsibilities over the years. From sorting out housing for foreign researchers to redecorating the faculty restaurant. “My work is never boring.”

On the way to a mature faculty thanks to research programmes

When education within Technische Bestuurskunde is slowly taking shape, it is time for the next step: research. With the appointment of Margot Weijnen as professor in 1994, the first major research programmes got off the ground within TB. Weijnen is one of the driving forces behind Design and Management of Infrastructures and NGInfra. “Thanks to these programmes, we were finally being taken seriously in Delft.”

How ethics acquired a prominent role within TPM and TU Delft

At the end of the previous century, technology and ethics were not a self-evident combination. Today, the picture looks different, thanks in part to professor of Ethics and Technology Ibo van de Poel. Ibo and his colleagues shape research and education in ethics and technology in Delft, out of the faculty of TPM. "We used to have to convince engineers to consider moral values in their designs. Now they come to us of their own accord."

How to set up a new degree programme from scratch?

When Technische Bestuurskunde was finally given the green light in 1991, the degree programme had to be developed pretty much from scratch. Pieter Bots, associate professor of Policy Analysis, took on this job together with Henk Sol, Wil Thissen and Simon Peerdeman. Thanks to a great boost of energy, team spirit and a lot of trial-and-error, TB gradually took shape. “We had to set up something that didn’t exist before.”

The bumpy road of a new degree programme: Technische Bestuurskunde

When TU Delft launched its degree programme in ‘Technische Bestuurskunde’, back in 1992, it was seen as alien. Was a university of technology really the right place for this study? What’s more, should it be a stand-alone programme or an additional package of courses? Wil Thissen, Emeritus Professor in Systems and Policy Analysis, is one of the founders of TB. He explains how the programme, which forms the basis for the Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management, came into being, despite some initial setbacks.
