Stories of DEMO
Electrometer
The Water Phantom setup with Electrometer was delivered and tested by DEMO at Holland PTC. This setup allows the intensity of a proton beam to be measured at various positions within a water tank.
MRI
MRI scans can be made simpler and more affordable. Andrew Webb, Professor of MRI Physics at LUMC, is developing low-cost mobile MRI scanners that can be deployed in developing countries to detect hydrocephalus.
ORCHID-setup
In the ORCHID setup, a circuit is created in which an organic fluid flows, acting as a liquid in the low-temperature section and as a dense vapor in the high-temperature section.
Gyroscoop
The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (ME) is conducting research on using gyroscopic assistance to maintain balance, with DEMO being closely involved in the project.
V-Track
A new, small-scale test installation has been designed to study Rolling Contact Fatigue (RCF), the metal fatigue that occurs due to the contact between railway tracks and the wheels of rolling stock. This new installation aims to enable better analysis of rail performance during rolling contact, providing more insight into RCF defects in particular.
HPTC
HollandPTC has been located behind the RID at the campus since 2018. HollandPTC is one of three proton therapy centres in the Netherlands. Proton therapy is a relatively new form of radiotherapy in the treatment of cancer, in which the tumour can be irradiated precisely with a proton beam.
Novair Project
The NOVAIR project studies how hybrid/electric aircraft configurations can be designed more efficiently. The use of several small, electrically powered propellers can increase efficiency, but this leads to interaction effects that must first be studied, before we are able to say anything about the aircraft.
Flameless Combustion
The Water Phantom setup with Electrometer was delivered and tested by DEMO at Holland PTC. This setup allows the intensity of a proton beam to be measured at various positions within a water tank.
Ultrasonic welding XY tabel
In 2017, DEMO built an Ultrasonic X-Y welding table for Aerospace Engineering. AE uses this to study the continuous welding of thermoplastic composites. In subsequent years, we have added some upgrades to the set-up.
