Riya Maria - Environmental Engineering
I hope to help optimize and build new techniques to help create a continuous life cycle for plastics, thus closing the plastic loop.
Why did you choose this programme?
The Environmental Engineering Master’s offers three tracks tackling issues like climate change, resource wastage, and water shortages. The Resource and Waste Engineering (R&WE) track aligns with my interest in plastic waste recovery. As a widely used commodity, improperly disposed of plastic endangers wildlife and pollutes the environment. Optimizing collection and recycling techniques can keep plastic in a continuous cycle, reducing microplastics, carbon emissions, and fossil fuel use.
What are you currently working on?
I’m currently working on my master thesis, focusing on solvent-based recycling of polyolefins (PE and PP) from Dutch household waste using a single bio-based solvent. Normally, the dissolution technique uses two different solvents, which is expensive and not environmentally friendly. My study aims to simplify this by using one solvent. I conduct lab experiments and sensor analyses to understand the process and quality of the recovered polymer, expected to be cleaner than market alternatives. Additionally, my research examines the technique's efficiency with contaminants like dirt and grease, potentially reducing the need for thorough cleaning and sorting, saving time and energy.
What’s the highlight of the program for you so far?
In one course in the R&WE track, we explored sustainability and circularity from an economic standpoint, which was enlightening. We developed business models and understood value creation. Then, we transitioned to the technical aspects, learning the physics behind waste separation techniques. This dual economic and technical approach to waste management was particularly stood out.
What do you hope to achieve?
I hope to help optimize and build new techniques to help create a continuous life cycle for plastics, thus closing the plastic loop. This would reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and our carbon footprint. I also hope to help companies adopt a circular business model and incorporate environmental costs into their overall financial analysis.
