After worldwide lockdowns due to COVID-19, many countries are on their way to 'the new normal'. To investigate and shape our new normal we need vetted data and models combined with profound knowledge about digital technologies and systems. On the new website ‘COVID-19: Technologies for the transition phase’ researchers from Delft University of Technology share their knowledge and expertise to help shape a responsible transition to the new normal in the critical years that lie ahead. Serge Hoogendoorn, professor Traffic operations & management, is one of the initiators. Many researchers from the department of Transport & Planning have already contributed.

Swimming pools are starting to open their doors again this week as part of the relaxation of the lockdown restrictions. The protocol adopted by the swimming pool sector to maintain safety and hygiene as best as possible was developed by TU Delft’s swimming pool water expert Maarten Keuten and researcher Jan Bakker of the AMC.

Now that we all work (mostly) from home, the strategy team of our faculty has thought of a way to get together online, to give each other our collegial supports and positive energy and have scientific events. Public transport worldwide is heavily affected by the coronavirus pandemic. In a period where sharing and crowding are becoming a public health concern, the connectivity and efficiency offered by mass transport become a potential peril.

The research project Scanning for Syria (SfS), in which geo-engineer Dominique Ngan-TIllard (GSE) is heavily involved, has been awarded a European Heritage Award / Europa Nostra Award in the category Research. The project focused on the use of 3D scanning and printing technology to make high quality reproductions of 12th century BC clay tablets with cuneiform writing.

Water research and the coronavirus are not a logical combination. Nevertheless, researchers from Delft and Norway have managed to apply a finding from their water research in the detection of the corona virus. A coincidence – but certainly not less useful.

Maurits Ertsen (Water Resources) received a subsidy of 3 million euro’s from RVO for his 6-year River Basin Management-project in Indonesia. “Together with project partners BBWS Brantas, PJT 1, DLH East Java, Ecoton, and Tauw we will focus on water quality governance in the Brantas river on Java, through a public-private approach including good governance, hydrology and water quality,” says Ertsen.
