Campus NL 2023-2027
Exchanging campus management information between Dutch universities
Campus NL 2023-2027 is a research project for and by universities. Universities in the Netherlands face a number of common challenges in managing their campuses. These include dilemmas concerning hybrid working and studying , dynamics in the numbers of incoming students, the shortage of (student) housing, sustainability and a healthy work environment. Over the next four years, the Campus NL research project will bring together these challenges to make campus management at each of the 14 Dutch universities more effective and efficient.
The Campus NL project supports policymakers, designers, and researchers in navigating contemporary trends in campus development and management. In the face of challenges such as the pandemic, rising energy costs, and material shortages, the need for up-to-date campus data is pressing. Supported and funded by UNL, the project aligns the demand and supply of data, focusing on comparable metrics relating to area, function, quality, and costs.
Campus Research Team Chair, Alexandra den Heijer, highlights the enduring significance of physical campuses, noting how the pandemic underscored their value for learning and community-building. Although virtual campuses gained prominence, they served as a complement rather than a replacement for physical spaces. Today’s campuses must support networked organisations and global communities while addressing increasing costs and limited budgets.
Alexandra Den Heijer and Monique Arkesteijn bring decades of expertise to Campus NL, exploring themes such as campus and city integration, sustainability, and smart campus tools. Collaborating with all 14 Dutch universities, the project fosters knowledge exchange through data collection, dashboards, and publications. Insights from international campuses and alternative knowledge-sharing models enhance its approach.
The 2023–2027 Campus NL project aims to professionalise campus management through a knowledge platform and network, further bridging science and practice in university campus development.
