International students Science Communication Track testimonials
Pat Hong | Student Science Communication Track
More than a year ago I began my science communication master program at TU Delft and now I am starting my graduation thesis project about social media as drivers for sustainable behaviors. I really enjoy my study here, especially the discussions in the courses during the first year in small groups and working together on projects and assignments, such as developing strategies for various stakeholders and designing communication processes.
The tailor-made program really offered me a lot of opportunities to explore both the science & technology domain (which for me is sustainable energy technology), as well as gaining knowledge and insight regarding communication issues. The iterative process of exploring new communication designs, strategies and means are challenging and fun.
Participating in our study association InterSECtion also highlights my life here in the Netherlands. We went to excursions (NEMO), workshops and a study trip (science communication conference) to London in May, 2010, and of course many social events. The close interaction between us as a small group is also what makes our program very unique and different from other programs!

I came to TU-Delft because I liked the general program, the courses and the university. I can say now the university is great, but I had difficulties finding suitable courses for me, due to my background in biology, TU Delft does not offer courses for people with this background. The relevance of the programme is the need to translate in an easy and understandable way the science world to the laid public.
I am planning to find a job in Europe in the communications field or pursue another masters degree.
In my free time I like to go to the city center to have a coffee while reading and on weekends I try to travel to other cities. There are not a lot of things to do in Delft, is a small city, but I have enjoyed my experience.
My best experience in Delft so far is getting to know people from all around the world

I have always been interested in learning about science and technology, that’s why previously worked as a clinical research monitor in a pharmaceutical company in Indonesia for 7 months. My background is science & pharmaceutical technology and I am a pharmacist. On the other hand, I am also eager to work in the communication area. Many problems in practice arise because there is a gap between scientists, engineers and society. Finding common problems include miscommunication within companies and incorrect publications of research results. Wanting to solve these problems encouraged me to study the Science Communication Track.
The Science Communication Track provides me an opportunity to learn about science communication and at the same time deepen my knowledge in technology. Moreover I can combine these different fields and experience it in a real situation by doing a practical project. In my project I research what competences and communication knowledge are important to work as communication professional. I met several people who work in the communication area and I found it very stimulating to learn more about how they do their job. Maybe someday I’ll do something similar.
Since learning about social sciences is quite new for me, I was pleased with the master programme that introduced me in this. Next to the theory on how to do research in social sciences, we are encouraged to conduct research in practice. I discovered a lot of new things by following this Science Communication Track and I think it will be a great challenge for all engineers.
